Splicing tapes are suitable for use with laminators, coaters, and other converting operations. They can be used for performing flying splices, manual splices, core starting, and roll finishing applications. Splicing release coated paper and film can require a functional splice, such as in the printing industry or casting of films. Butt splicing:
Single-coated tape joins two webs edge to edge and secures the joint on one or both sides with the tape.
Overlap or flying splices:
Apply the double-coated tape to the end of the roll, remove the liner, and expose the adhesive to join the next roll.

These splicing tapes are available in a variety of carriers. The carrier is the type of material to which the adhesive is applied. These range from papers in many grades to films, cloth, and foils. The selection of the proper adhesive is critical to the performance of the splice tape. There are three major families of adhesives: rubber, acrylic, and silicone. Each of these categories is tailored by a variety of technical factors that significantly impact performance:
Rubber Adhesive
can be sticky to the touch, often described as having good thumb appeal. Traditional natural rubber-based systems were solvent spread, and today we have synthetic rubber adhesives often applied as a thermoplastic or hot melt coating process.
Acrylic Adhesive
tackiness may be low, but ultimate strength builds over time. The ultimate bond strength can be stronger than glue or mechanical fasteners. Acrylic adhesives that are solvent spread can be very tacky and adhere to low surface energy substrates. The emulsion or water-based versions can also be aggressive, and the manufacturing process of this industrial tape solution is environmentally friendly.
Silicone Adhesive
is used when significant heat is present or when applied to a release liner or treated surface. These adhesives can have very low thumb appeal but stick above expectations to unique surfaces.
